How your paycheck is taxed in 2026
Every paycheck has up to four main tax deductions: federal income tax, FICA (Social Security and Medicare), state income tax, and local/city tax in some jurisdictions. The amounts depend on your gross pay, filing status, pay frequency, and where you live.
Federal income tax
The 2026 federal income tax has seven brackets from 10% to 37%. Only income above each bracket threshold is taxed at that rate — this is the marginal rate system. The standard deduction for 2026 is $16,100 (single) and $32,200 (married filing jointly).
FICA taxes
FICA covers Social Security (6.2%, on wages up to $184,500 in 2026) and Medicare (1.45% on all wages, plus an additional 0.9% on wages above $200,000 for single filers).
State income tax
State taxes vary widely. Some states have no income tax at all; others use flat rates or progressive brackets.
- No state income tax: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, Wyoming.
- Flat tax: Arizona (2.50%), Colorado (4.40%), Georgia (5.09%), Idaho (5.30%), Illinois (4.95%), Indiana (2.95%), Iowa (3.80%), Kentucky (3.50%), Louisiana (3.00%), Michigan (4.25%), Mississippi (4.00%), North Carolina (3.99%), Ohio (2.75%), Pennsylvania (3.07%), Utah (4.50%).
- Progressive: California (1%–12.3%), New York (4%–10.9%), Hawaii, New Jersey, Oregon, and most other states.
